Inside a Crawford Bryanston classroom where creativity leads learning

A simple classroom activity is shaping more than just clay; it is shaping confident, expressive young learners.

In a world where early education is increasingly focused on holistic development, classrooms are evolving into spaces that nurture both creativity and emotional well-being.
At Crawford Bryanston, Grade 00 teacher Nikita Govan is doing just that through a simple and impactful activity – clay play.

On March 17, her classroom transformed into a hands-on learning environment where children explored clay not just as a material, but as a tool for growth.

“Clay is a powerful learning material. It helps children develop fine motor skills and dexterity, while also supporting emotional regulation.”

She added that beyond the physical benefits, clay offers something equally important, a non-verbal outlet for expression.

“For young children who may not yet have the vocabulary to articulate their feelings, this form of play becomes a safe and creative language.”

At the heart of the classroom approach is a strong emphasis on learner agency. Learners are encouraged to make their own choices, from what they create to how they express themselves.

“We focus on voice and choice. Children decide for themselves what they want to make and how they want to show their creativity.”

Govan elaborated that this approach not only builds confidence but also fosters independence at an early age. By allowing children to lead their own learning experiences, educators create an environment where curiosity and imagination thrive.

In Govan’s classroom, clay is more than play; it is a foundation for lifelong skills.
