Chaplin Street sinkhole fully repaired as JRA completes final tar work

Motorists can now drive normally after the Johannesburg Roads Agency finalised repairs to the sinkhole site.

The sinkhole on Chaplin Street in Illovo has now been fully repaired following the completion of final resurfacing work by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).

On April 10, a JRA team returned to the site near number 15 Chaplin Street to complete the tar resurfacing, restoring the road to normal driving conditions.

The final stage of repairs follows earlier backfilling work that stabilised the damaged section of roadway.

The sinkhole had previously raised safety concerns among residents and motorists. Temporary measures were initially put in place before repair work began.

Earlier, head of department for regional operations, Khaya Gqibitole, indicated that repair work was underway and scheduled to be completed by April 3, weather permitting. The agency met the initial repair deadline and subsequently completed the final resurfacing stage.

Motorists travelling along Chaplin Street can now drive normally, with the affected section of road fully restored.
