Cyril Ramaphosa to attend 8th African Union summit in Egypt

African leaders will meet in El-Alamein on Sunday to discuss integration, trade, water infrastructure and conflict prevention.

President Cyril Ramaphosa will attend the 8th African Union (AU) mid-year co-ordination meeting in El-Alamein, Egypt, on October 4 in his capacity as chairperson of the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

The meeting brings together the heads of state and government of the AU Bureau, chairpersons of the regional economic communities (RECs) and regional mechanisms, and leaders of AU organs alongside development partners, including the UN Economic Commission for Africa and the African Development Bank.

Leaders will exchange views on continental integration, seen as central to realising the: Africa we want, under Agenda 2063. They will also assess the division of labour between the AU, the RECs, and member states to ensure the bodies complement one another.

On the agenda is a review of AUDA-NEPAD’s role in accelerating integration, progress on the African continental free trade agreement, and an update on water and sanitation infrastructure.

Leaders are also expected to consider AU efforts to prevent and resolve conflict, including strengthening its early warning mechanism.

The summit offers an opportunity for bilateral talks on issues of mutual concern.

Egypt will host a Business Forum from October 2 to 4 and a summit of the founders of AUDA-NEPAD on October 3.

Ramaphosa will be accompanied by International Relations and Co-operation Minister Ronald Lamola, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, and Trade, Industry and Competition Minister Parks Tau.
