Bryanston residents urged to act faster on service delivery failures
Ward 103 councillor Lynda Shackelford calls for active citizenship after only two residents reported a sewage overflow on Ballyclare Drive.
A recent sewage overflow on Ballyclare Drive in Bryanston has sparked renewed calls for active community involvement in reporting service delivery issues.
Ward 103 councillor Lynda Shackleford visited the site with the publication on April 10, where Johannesburg Water teams were working to unblock a manhole that had been overflowing for three days.

Despite the seriousness of the issue, Shackleford said only two residents had reported the problem to her.
“This has been running for three days now. Thank you to the two residents who escalated it to me, only two. We need better active citizenship at the moment within our wards, and I’m asking residents if they can step up a bit.

“When they see something, whether it pipe burst, sewage spills, or water outages happening, please report it, and please advise me if it’s not done within the second day. There is a turnaround time of 24 hours for Joburg Water as per the service level agreement.”
She also raised concerns about the recurring infrastructure failures. “My biggest concern is that this happens when we have burst pipes in the area, and water is isolated for three or more days. Then we get a lot more bursts with sewage in the areas.
“We need residents to step up. Active citizenship is essential if we want to see faster responses and better service delivery in our communities.”
