The Next Gen Rockfest, hosted by School of Rock Sandton, brought together young aspiring musicians from local schools for a hands-on musical experience. More than just a fun day out, the event created a space where children could step onto the stage, try new instruments, and connect with others who share their passion for music.

Throughout the day, children rotated between sessions, including guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. For many, it was their first time experimenting with different aspects of music, from technical skills to improvisation and performance techniques.

Russell Lund, founder of the School of Rock Sandton and Parktown North branches, said the focus of the day was giving children an opportunity to grow beyond the classroom. “Next Gen Rockfest is our way of giving youngsters a platform to express themselves, connect with peers, and learn directly from artists they admire.

“We are all about getting kids on stage, building confidence, building a community, getting skills, and changing lives. So, today is just a great day of fun for everyone.”
One of the attendees, AveThandwa Jamba, said he learnt a lot about the guitar. “I enjoyed being here a lot. I mean, every performance, the things I’ve learned. I can use that in everything I get to do. Like, playing the guitar, that was interesting.

“I didn’t even know things you could add behind the guitar. Plus, improvise, that was something I needed to know. Same with the vocals, alto and soprano, that was interesting for me to learn.”
