“Preliminary investigations suggest that a white Volkswagen UP was travelling northbound in the extreme left lane. The driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle, which then veered into the western water trench,” Fihla said.

“The vehicle continued its momentum, breaching the steel barricades before colliding violently with the pillar of the Woodmead Drive bridge. The impact, which primarily affected the roof of the vehicle, caused the car to be deflected back onto the freeway.”

Fihla confirmed two fatalities at the scene: the female driver and a female passenger.

“Both victims were declared deceased on-scene by emergency medical personnel. Their bodies were removed and transported to the Hillbrow State Mortuary.

“A case docket of culpable homicide has been officially opened at the Sandton SAPS for further investigation into the cause of the crash.”

Fihla urged all motorists to exercise extreme caution, especially during early morning hours, and to adhere strictly to speed limits and road conditions to prevent further loss of life on our roads.
