How Parkmore Nursery School preschoolers made a big impact for Mandela Day
Parkmore Nursery School learners embraced the spirit of giving by helping collect donations for elderly residents and preparing sandwiches for those in need.
The spirit of Nelson Mandela Day came alive at Parkmore Nursery School on July 17, as learners, parents, and staff joined forces to collect blankets, adult nappies, baked cookies, sandwiches, barrier creams, and other essential items for people in need.
The donations were handed over to the Catholic Women’s League Rivonia Parish, which will distribute the supplies to residents of the Joseph Gerrard Old Age Home in Alexandra on July 18.

The homemade sandwiches will also be shared with homeless people in the community through the church’s outreach programme.
Parkmore Nursery School principal Nancy Turner said the school community embraced the opportunity to make a meaningful difference during the annual 67 Minutes for Mandela Day initiative.

“They have just under 40 residents and are in desperate need for adult nappies, blankets, and barrier creams. Our parents really dug deep and they contributed all of these things. Our children, some of them are only 18 months old and our oldest are just over 5, have made sandwiches for the homeless. Those are also going to be distributed to the community.”

Sharon Mvududu, from Catholic Women’s League Rivonia Parish, expressed her gratitude to the school for its generosity, and said the partnership reflects the church’s commitment to serving those in need. “I’d like to say thank you to Parkmore Nursery School. This is going to go a very long way. Our elderly are in dire need of nappies and barrier creams, because a lot of them are immobile and we really appreciate this.”
She also thanked the parents and children who prepared sandwiches for the church’s outreach programme. “We’d like to say thank you to the parents and to the kids for making beautiful sandwiches. This is an ongoing initiative from the church. So, any donations, we are truly grateful.”
