Men bowlers from Gauteng fight for Gauteng Open champion title
The pressure was on as bowlers from across Gauteng competed in the men’s singles section of the Perfect Delivery Gauteng Open.
The pursuit of a Gauteng Open title brought some of the province’s best lawn bowlers to Morningside Country Club on July 12, where competitors faced off in the men’s singles section of the Perfect Delivery Gauteng Open.
With every match determining who would progress, bowlers from across Gauteng districts, joined by players from neighbouring clubs, competed for places in the knockout rounds.
According to Rob Zimmermann, from the Morningside Country Club, the Gauteng Open is one of the province’s best lawn bowl tournaments, and has been running for the full month of July. “It represents all the districts within the Gauteng province. It’s an open tournament, so therefore neighbouring clubs can also participate.
“In the singles, we have 160 pools, with 3 players in a pool. If you win your pool, you’re qualified to the knockout rounds.”
Every delivery was measured, every angle carefully considered, and every shot released with care as bowlers battled it out, fighting for a place in the next stage of the competition. “It’s a great competition, with lots of strength. Lots of pro tiers and ex-pro tiers playing and a lot of fun.”

One of the players, Philip Vermeulen, from CBC Old Boys Bowling Club, said: “The competition was tight, but I really enjoyed myself playing against tough opponents. It was a beautiful day.”
Zimmermann said pool winners will advance to the knockout rounds, where the competition intensifies through the last 32, last 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, and the finals, which will be held at Delville Bowls Club in the last weekend of July.
