Parliament condemns South African National Roads Agency contractor over viral video

The chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Transport, Donald Selamolela, said an incident involving a South African National Roads Agency (Sanral) contractor, in a video that has since gone viral, was unacceptable and regrettable.

The video, believed to have been recorded at a Sandton nightclub, went viral and sparked debate about violence directed at women.

In the video, a man is alleged to have intimidated three women and threatened to murder them.

“It is unacceptable that this kind of behaviour was brazenly displayed by someone in the civil engineering and construction industry,” said Selamolela.

“It is right up there when it comes to alienation of women in our country, especially black women. On behalf of the portfolio committee, I condemn the incident, which should never have happened.”

Selamolela said that the committee has been patient for too long with those who perpetuate such unacceptable behaviour.

“The processes that have been invoked can never be enough of a sanction. In addition, there needs to be a thorough follow-up on all performance related to this contractor,” he added.

He said there is no place for violence directed at women in South Africa, adding that there should be consequences. “We will not have vultures lead in institutions and companies where we seek to increase participation of women,” Selamolela said.

He called on all state-owned companies to sanction those who perpetuate violence against women in the workplace and in society.
