Men contend on the bowling greens
MORNINGSIDE Country Club hosted its annual men's only bowls classic tournament, in which 144 bowlers from as far afield as Durban, Kimberley and Cape Town participated.

The tournament has been running for the past seven years and is claimed to be one of the largest bowls tournaments in South Africa. Many Springbok and provincial bowlers from across the country participate, with regular participants including Springbok players Gerry Baker, Jason Evans and Bobby Donnelly.
Tournament convener Sharon Goldwasser said bowls needed more recognition in the sporting world. “Bowls is a game of skill and fierce competition,” she said. “It used to be known as ‘old man’s marbles’ but it is now controlled by the younger generation – and they all want to win.”
She said consistency, practice and regular competitions were what separated excellent bowlers from the rest.
The winning team on the day included Baker, Evans, Wayne Perry, and Dave Renaud. The runners up in the main section were Tony Mazaris, Duanne Abrahams, Mike Redshaw, Prince Neulonde and Charles Turner.
Goldwasser said the club also hosted a women’s tournament in December. “This is done with a different theme each year and the ladies dress up accordingly. It is amazing to see. Last year, it was called the Petticoat Day and had a full field of bowlers.”
The Morningside Country Club also has a hockey, tennis, croquet and running section.
