Sandton Library sale yields valuable gems

THE Sandton Library's book sale gives bookworms the chance to search through piles of books of all genres, many of them, unusual and valuable books.

Keith Elliot, chairman of the Friends of the Sandton Library, which organises the monthly sale, said among the books donated to them was a 129-year-old copy of Lord Byron’s poems which was promptly sold.

A copy of Vladimir Tretchikoff’s autobiography, first edition, hard back, with the great artist’s autograph in it, will be on offer at the next book sale at the library on 23 August, 9am to 5pm, and 24 August, 9am to 1pm.

“I am sure this book will attract great interest, as Tretchi, as he was known, has suddenly become very fashionable in artistic circles,” said Elliot. “Many years ago, my wife Patsy visited a Tretchikoff exhibition in Cape Town and bought a couple of his prints, which he had signed – so I know the signature is genuine.”

He said most of the books, hard and soft cover, were available for just R15.

The Friends of the Sandton Library are always looking for new members.
