The fine art of parenting

SAVOY - Jewish community centre Chabad House is offering a new course to help community members navigate the world's most difficult job – parenting.

Most parents are at best ill-prepared to take on what might be their hardest task. Children do not come with instruction manuals, and the responsibility of raising them to be well-adjusted, moral and productive members of society falls squarely on their parents’ shoulders.

In recognition that parents are constantly bombarded with a multitude of educational approaches, and are constantly required to strike the balance between discipline and freedom, Chabad House offers a new course that looks to timeless Jewish wisdom to answer the greatest parenting challenges and questions.

The course, The Art of Parenting was designed by the Rohr Jewish Learning Institute to help parents navigate the stormy waters of child-rearing. From questions of how children and parents should relate to each other, to how to help a child cultivate a healthy self-esteem, the course provides a solid foundation anchored in Jewish thought and practice for parents to explore, and develop their own parenting philosophies and techniques.

“Empires and civilizations have come and gone, but the Jewish people have survived,” said Rabbi Ari Kievman of Chabad House, who will run the six-session course.

“This course taps into the great Jewish parenting success story that is our people’s survival, against all odds, over the course of thousands of years.”

Like all Chabad programmes, The Art of Parenting is designed to appeal to men and women at all levels of Jewish knowledge, including those without any prior experience or background in Jewish learning. All the institute’s courses are open to the public, and attendees need not be affiliated with a particular organisation to participate.

Details: courses start week of 9 February; Chabad House, Savoy and the Kirsh Goodness and Kindness Centre, Sandton Central; 011 440 6600; jli@chabad.org.za; visitwww.JLI.org.za for registration and information.
