Some sweet art

SANDTON – Skye Quadling and Victoria Wigzell plan on displaying an interesting, edible form of art at the FNB Joburg Art Fair.

Skye Quadling (24) and Victoria Wigzell (26) are passionate artists who will display and sell a unique and delicious form of art, in conjunction with Stevenson Art Gallery, at the FNB Joburg Art Fair at the Sandton Convention Centre on 8 September.

The team, who refer to themselves as ‘Koeks’, are experts in the field of art. Quadling studied an honours degree in fine art at the University of the Witwatersrand and Wigzell completed a master’s degree in public art at Ecav in Switzerland.

They have put their adventurous and creative minds together to come up with an interesting concept. Quadling explained, “We make edible versions of your favorite artworks. We make sense of art by giving it a sense of taste.” The first piece is based on Damien Hirst’s The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living.

Wigzell and Quadling said that their interpretation of the piece is an edible, green sweet made with jelly and a white chocolate shark. The flavours of this treat are just as unique as their artistic works as they mix the flavours of chocolate, bubblegum, mint and coconut.

Wigzell added that the formation of these edible pieces has ‘become an artwork’ and said that the next piece they plan on making is inspired by local artist, Serge Alain Nitegeka. She highlighted, “The knowledge to make anything and everything is out there. Artists can use anything they want because they are so free.”

Quadling said that she is inspired by art because it allows her to find a positive space where she can think about things. She passionately added, “We learn new things from each other as a team and each project teaches us something fresh and different. There is such freedom in the way we think.”

Wigzell said that her studies in Switzerland introduced her to a word that reminds her of the free-spirited work that she does with her art partner.

“Bricolage is a term used to describe something that is done spontaneously by someone who grasps an opportunity and need not be an expert. Example, we are not chefs, but we still make delicious art.”
