Cultural activities are there to make schoolchildren feel free to express themselves as they are completely different to what you see in class.
According to Hyde Park High School, Arts and Culture head of cultural, Tracy Bergman, the people you see during the school performances are different people in the class.
“As teachers, we see a different side of a learner because they get to do what they really want to, as not every child wants to go and learn maths. so we encourage learners to take part in music festivals,” said Bergman.
On Thursday, 3 May, Hyde Park High School in partnership with Home Run producer, Danielle Bentel, together with Carly Graeme and Rayna Music had hosted the first day of its tenth Home Run SA music festival at the school and it is expected to end on 5 May.
Bentel said the festival theme this year was a commemoration of the late Hugh Masekela as he once stated that he ‘lived for music since he could think’.
“This is so apt when one considers the subconscious and conscious thoughts, ideas, visions and opinions we experience while listening to or creating music,” said Bentel.
“These types of activities help learners express who they are. I started this initiative nine years ago because I wanted the young ones to be able to express themselves through lyrics,” added Bentel.
One of the play leaders, Nkosinathi Ndlovhu (16) said he has always had a passion for music but had challenges of not knowing which directions to face when he needed help.
“I always wanted to rap, and when I heard about Home Run SA, I knew that was the direction one needs to take as not having money to record in the industry is very challenging.”
Another play leader, Rebecca Illa (16) said she was a very shy person but since the event started she has always been able to express herself through lyrics.
“I am really scared to talk to people but when I am on stage and I am a different character it is really nice as it is easy for me to express myself.”
