UPDATE: Eskom starts load shedding

Eskom declares stage 1 load shedding.

Update,15 June, 13.30pm:

Eskom has declared stage 1 load shedding which started at 11:45 and will end at 9pm tonight.

This comes as a result of industrial action currently affecting constrained power supply at Eskom.

Despite the City receiving assurances that power generation would be secured, Eskom’s contingency measures failed.

For the City of Johannesburg customers, City Power will follow a load shedding schedule that residents are advised to follow.

City Power will continue updating customers throughout the day as and when new information becomes available.

Update, 15 June, 7.50am:

Residents continue to report power outages this morning, hours after Eskom last night, 14 June, claimed that all power was restored by 8.25pm. Some residents say they have been without power for more than 24 hours.

Update, 14 June, 9pm:

Eskom has taken to social media to report that electricity has been restored in all areas. However, residents have responded in frustration as it seems many areas are still without power.

Update, 7.15pm:

Khulu Phasiwe, the spokesperson for Eskom, has confirmed on social media that there would be stage one load shedding tonight, 14 June, from 5.50pm to 8pm.

It is yet to be confirmed as to which areas will be affected. Eskom has reportedly urged residents to limit their electricity usage by switching off geysers, pool pumps, heaters and non-essential appliances within the above-mentioned peak period this evening.

Earlier, Eskom confirmed that there have been several incidents of road blockades, attacks on staff, and wilful damage of electricity infrastructure. As a result, all road coal deliveries have been stopped for security reasons.

According to Fin24, the national grid is under considerable pressure due to cold winter weather experienced throughout the week.

Earlier, 2.50pm:

According to a statement released on the Eskom Facebook and Twitter pages, the generation and distribution of electricity across Eskom’s network is constrained today due to the acts of sabotage and intimidation that characterise the current industrial action by members of the trade unions.

Eskom confirmed that there have been several incidents of road blockades, attacks on staff, and wilful damage of electricity infrastructure. As a result, all road coal deliveries have been stopped for security reasons.

Coal deliveries by rail deliveries and conveyor belts still continue to operate, albeit at limited capacity.

The power stations that are worst affected by the industrial action are Hendrina, Camden, Kendal, and Arnot.

Eskom will continue to provide regular updates about the state of the power system through various media platforms.
