Hero Burn Foundation collects essential items for those affected by Marlboro fire

MARLBORO – A fire broke out in the early hours of the morning on 3 July and has affected nearly 60 families.

An organisation dedicated to helping burn survivors and their families is collecting goods for families who lost their homes during a fire in Marlboro.

The Hero Burn Foundation is collecting much-needed items including blankets, toiletries and clothes at the Sandton Fire Station to assist.

A fire broke out at around 3am on 3 July destroying 27 shacks. The fire left about 60 families displaced during a cold front. It is believed the fire started when a resident left a fire unattended. No one was injured in but Robert Mulaudzi, the City of Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson urged residents to be cautious and to avoid devastating fire incidents.

Annerie Du Plooy, the founder of the foundation said that so far there had been a fantastic response from the community. “There have been so many calls and questions from people about what they need at the moment.”

Du Plooy added that currently they still desperately need clothes and toiletries. Volunteers also made soup to serve members of the community.

Mulaudzi said, “Our disaster management officials together with other city relief stakeholders are on site assisting the affected families with food parcels and building materials to rebuild their shacks,” he added.

He also urged residents to use their heating and lighting appliances such as candles, paraffin stoves, heaters and Imbaula (a gel-burning stove), safely this winter and not leave any children unattended near a fire while they are on school holidays.

“Through our public education section, we will also be intensifying our winter fire safety door-to-door campaigns targeting all our most vulnerable communities at our 189 informal settlements throughout the city educating them about the safe use of this heating and lighting appliances so that we can together reduce the number of fire incidents and fatalities this winter.”
