UPDATE: Nelson Mandela Square clears the scene of any threat, trading continues as normal

SANDTON – Nelson Mandela Square confirmed a bomb threat was received at a store today at 11.10am.

Earlier, 29 August, 2pm

Brigadier Egen Moodley, station commander at the Sandton Police Station confirmed that there was a bomb scare at Nelson Mandela Square.

Moodley said the area was cordoned off and surrounding shops were evacuated.

“Members of Joburg Explosives unit and Joburg K9 were summoned and attended the scene. A full sweep was done and no parcels nor items found.”

He continued that the area was double checked by both expert units.

Community members have taken to social media to report that an evacuation is currently taking place at Nelson Mandela Square today, 29 August. This comes following reports of an evacuation at Mall of Africa.

Nelson Mandela Square confirms that a bomb threat was received at a store today at 11.10am. “As a precautionary measure, Nelson Mandela Square is currently conducting a partial evacuation of the area. We would like to reiterate that the safety and security of shoppers and tenants is of utmost importance and all necessary precautions are being adhered to during this process.”
