UPDATE – Female driver who knocked down a JMPD officer has been arrested

MARLBORO – A person has been arrested in connection with the death of a female JMPD officer, early this morning (17 October).

MMC for Public Safety Micheal Sun has confirmed that the driver of the vehicle who knocked down a female JMPD officer, leading to her death, early this morning (17 October) has been arrested.

The female driver was arrested at the scene and taken by local police to the station, an investigation has been initiated.

Sun said, “Immediately after the accident, JMPD and paramedics rushed to the scene to assist. However, despite the efforts by paramedics to resuscitate the officer, they could not bring her back and the officer was declared deceased on the scene.”

The officer is survived by her husband and three children, the youngest being only 11 months old. Sun sent his deepest condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of the deceased officer.

Tragedy struck on Thursday morning (17 October) when a JMPD officer lost her life after being struck by a car while directing traffic in Marlboro.

According to Metro police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar, the incident took place at the M1 off-ramp.

Minnaar told the Sandton Chronicle, “I can confirm that the accident took place on Thursday morning. We are still with the family at the moment and this is a sensitive issue. We will provide further details at a later stage.”

MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun said the officer sustained serious injuries. “The officer was deployed to conduct traffic duty in Sandton this morning [17 October] when she was knocked down by a car. She was declared dead after efforts to bring the officer back was not successful.

“The accident is being investigated at the moment and the family will be informed through the City’s protocol process.”

He concluded, “Our deepest condolences to the family, colleagues and friends to the deceased officer, we are mourning with them.”
