Young chefs take centre stage

FERNDALE – HTA School of Culinary Art holds a competition meant to expose a new generation of chefs.

HTA School of Culinary Art held its sixth annual Legacy Young Chef Competition.

Young chef, Duduzile Khumalo was the competition’s big winner taking home the first prize. She, along with the other finalists, was awarded with a legacy competition hamper filled with various amazing prizes from the contributing sponsors. They also were given HTA School of Culinary Art Legacy embroidered SiChef uniforms.

The finalists were full-time students who are about to complete their final year in the two-year culinary arts programme at the school. They were chosen as semi-finalists for this competition based on their overall performance and marks, both practical and theoretical, over the two years. Following a cook-off held in August at HTA, the eight finalists were selected.

Executive chefs of leading establishments and hospitality industry experts formed part of the judging panel.

The competition is said to have been created to inspire the minds of young South African chefs. It is also meant to allow the students to showcase their skills and impart the latest culinary trends, and further test themselves against the challenges of their chosen career.

An objective of the competition, other than that of the educational and fun component offered through competitions, was to expose the students, the next generation of industry leaders, to a wide range of quality products and ingredients and to allow them to incorporate them into five-star cuisine.

The event was followed with cocktails and was attended by about 60 influential industry members, family members as well as the sponsors.
