Paddlers take on championships

Local paddlers recently competed against the country’s best in the South African Marathon Championships.

Local paddlers from Sandton and surrounding areas recently excelled in the South African Marathon Championships.

The championship, which took place in KwaZulu-Natal, saw the country’s best paddlers battle it out for national honours.

St David’s Marist Inanda learner Theo Dreyer won the U16 category in a time of 01:50:00. Theo later partnered with KZN’s Lungelo Gumede for the U18 K2 junior race (two man kayak event), where the duo finished in sixth place.

“The races included a number of short portage sections where the paddlers run with the boat,” said Jennie Dallas of the Gauteng Canoe Union.

Other St David’s Marist Inanda learners who were selected to represent Team Gauteng included Nicholas Erwee, Luke Salmon and Matthew Charter.

Nicholas finished in eighth place while Luke finished in fifth in the U18 category. Matthew finished in fourth place in the U14 category.

“A successful event indeed for Gauteng canoe marathon future champions,” said Dallas.
