Sandton community partners to uplift Alex Black Poison Football Club

Rotary Club of Morningside, Tenth Sports and residents recently gave the Alex Black Poison Football Club a new look.

In support of the young footballers, the celebratory handover of new kit recently took place at Alexandra Stadium.

Aside from the new kit, the donation included 14 balls, two goalpost nets, two first aid kits, socks, 40 cones, kit bags and various other items.

Rotary Club President Felix Ndlovu, donor Thandi Senoamali, team manager Collen Mamabolo and team captain Lesego Sabela celebrate the new kit and equipment.

“Rotary Morningside is proud to be getting behind our local football club, Alex Black Poison. It’s only by investing at this level that we can ensure our boys make it to the next Fifa World Cup,” said Rotary president Felix Ndlovu.

Alex Black Poison was formed back in 2011 when, following the World Cup in South Africa, interest in and support for grassroots soccer was at its height.

But over the years support has dwindled and the club has found itself scraping to cover its costs as the young players pay no club fees.

Ndlovu added that 2022 was a particularly tough year for the club. The soccer club’s shed was looted and all their balls and equipment were stolen, their home playing ground was rezoned for student accommodation, and worst of all, a tragic drowning incident took the life of their star U13 player.

The Alex Black Poison senior team is proud of their new sponsored kit.

Despite the setbacks, nothing has stopped the popular local soccer club from performing to expectations in all their respective leagues. The team has an enviable track record and has produced more than its fair share of big players, despite having next to no formal resources.

The club is run out of the pockets of its managers and the coaches, and the goodwill of volunteers and supporters in the community.

“Rotary Morningside is partnering with the football club to help them become more financially viable through merchandising, sponsorships and the implementation of sound systems and processes.”
Collen Mamabolo, the club’s manager said, “We thank the Rotary Club for the generous donation and are thrilled to have their support.”
