An active week at the Varsity College Sandton

The sport focus week which was coordinated by the campus’ sport committee also included various activations such as friendly yet competitive sport derbies in netball, basketball, hockey, cycling and hiking against other private tertiary institutions.

Students and staff eagerly participated in, among other exciting sporting activities, a boxing aerobics session as part of a sports focus week at the IIE Varsity College Sandton.

The purpose of the week, hosted on the Sandton campus, was to promote physical well-being and showcase various sporting codes and activities that the college offers.
The boxing aerobics session, facilitated by a personal trainer at Planet Fitness Sandton Gate Phaphama Jali, reminded students of the importance of stepping away from their academic schedules and spending some time being active and burning calories with boxing aerobics.

“Students often tend to underestimate the power of being healthy,” said Jali.
“And they hide behind the books or say that there is not enough time in the day for exercise. I can safely say that as a personal trainer, I work with a lot of the working class, and if they can make time for the gym, so can students.”

He added that being physically active has a lot of benefits that can go a long way, and one of those is that it improves focus, which improves performance, and this is key to academic success.
