Young investors shine at the 2024 JSE Investment Challenge

Future financial leaders emerged from JSE’s 2024 Investment Challenge in Sandton, with Stellenbosch University, University of Pretoria, Mpumelelo Secondary School, and Tlakula Secondary School leading the way.

The Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) celebrated a successful year with its 2024 Investment Challenge on October 18, showcasing exceptional talent among its participants.

More than 49 000 individuals took part in this year’s competition, a significant increase from the previous year’s 29 000, demonstrating the growing interest in investment among South African learners and students.

Ralph Speirs, the senior CSI officer at the JSE, expressed admiration for the strategic thinking and enthusiasm displayed by participants.

“The JSE Investment Challenge cultivates an investment culture and enhances financial literacy across educational institutions.”

Now in its 51st year, the challenge allows teams to invest a virtual R1m in real stocks over six months, providing invaluable practical experience.

The competition featured several categories, with notable winners emerging from universities and schools alike.

In the university Speculator Portfolio category, Stellenbosch University’s team, Koffie and Beskuit 2.0, clinched first place with an impressive 18% portfolio growth, earning them a R30 000 prize and a trip to an international stock exchange.

Tsogo Secondary School won third place in the Schools Equity Portfolio category.

Following closely was the University of Pretoria’s, NED – Group 53, with 17.15% growth, and the University of Zululand’s, UZ-eXcape Holdings, with 17.12% growth, who won R20 000 and R10 000 respectively.

In the ETF/ETN category, the University of Pretoria’s, UP Capital team, took home R30 000 with their strategic investment approach. Teams from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and the University of Cape Town secured second and third places.

The schools’ categories also showcased remarkable talent.

Mpumelelo Secondary School dominated the Income Portfolio category for the second consecutive year, with MP the Unpredictable leading the way.

Tlakula Secondary School’s, MW-The Quad Squad, topped the Equity Portfolio, while Paul Roos Gymnasium’s, Elons Musk’s Traders, won the Speculator Portfolio with 15% growth.

Buren High School’s, AGN-Gandalf’s Merchants, excelled in the ETF/ETN category, winning R26 000. Notably, two teams from Zola High School secured second and third places in the same category, highlighting the school’s strong performance.

With collaborations from key stakeholders such as Standard Bank and Nedbank, the JSE aims to further expand its reach, enhancing financial literacy and investment understanding among South African youth.
