Street becomes public nuisance in Rivonia

Rivonia residents demand crackdown on Eden Crescent, which is currently littered with informal vendors, taxis, and traders.

Rivonia residents are demanding urgent by-law enforcement to clean up Eden Crescent, a street they say has become a hub for noise, litter, public drinking, and unregulated trading.

The Rivonia Wide Residents Association (RWRA) says the situation began with a cluster of catering caravans and has escalated to include informal vendors, illegally parked commuter taxis, and late-night disorder.

The RWRA said: “These caravans are not just trading informally; they have encouraged other informal vendors to set up shop nearby, causing noise, litter, and late-night disorder. We have counted up to 30 illegally parked commuter taxis drawn to the site daily. Public drinking, loitering, and environmental degradation are now routine.”

They added that the hotspot, adjacent to Rivonia Road and opposite the Shell Garage, KFC, and Burger King, has drawn concern from major commercial stakeholders, who say it threatens business viability and investor confidence.

According to the RWRA, Rivonia scored 96.7 out of 100 in the city’s own urban decay audit, a classification of decay that the group says reflects the lack of enforcement.

The association is calling for:

1. Removal of all caravans from Eden Crescent,
2. Enforcement of noise, health, and public trading by-laws,
3. Inspections of traders’ licenses, and
4. Removal of illegally parked vehicles.

Despite repeated complaints, the RWRA says the city has failed to act, warning that the community is prepared to escalate matters. “If we don’t see action, we will consider legal options to uphold our rights as a community. We are willing to engage on long-term solutions, but the safety and dignity of Rivonia can’t wait.”
