JMPD arrest 3 for cable theft in Bramley after public tip-off
Quick action by vigilant residents, and swift response by JMPD, led to the arrest of three suspects in Bramley, for allegedly stealing cables and tampering with vital infrastructure.
Three male suspects have been arrested in Bramley after being caught in the act of allegedly stealing electrical cables, following a tip-off from alert members of the public.
The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) confirmed that the arrests took place on August 10, during a routine stop and search operation conducted by Region E operations officers near the intersection of Corlett Drive and Louis Botha Avenue.
According to eyewitnesses, a white Toyota Quantum was seen parked at the corner of Corlett Drive and High Street.

The vehicle’s occupants were allegedly loading stolen cables, pretending to carry out vehicle repairs. Officers responded immediately, arriving to find three suspects at the scene.
JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said: “Two of the suspects attempted to flee but were quickly apprehended following a short foot chase. The third suspect was later discovered hiding inside a nearby manhole and was also arrested.”
A search of the Toyota Quantum revealed that the rear seats had been removed to accommodate the stolen materials.
Officers recovered 38 pieces of cable, a hacksaw, a chain block, and specialised manhole-opening equipment, commonly used in infrastructure crimes.
All three suspects have been detained at Bramley SAPS, and a case of tampering with essential infrastructure has been opened. The investigation is ongoing.
Fihla emphasised the importance of community vigilance. “We urge residents to continue reporting suspicious activity. It is through this kind of partnership, between law enforcement and the public, that we can effectively fight back against the sabotage of our city’s infrastructure.”
JMPD Chief of Police Commissioner Patrick Jaca also applauded the efforts of the officers, and the public. “We commend the public for their swift action and co-operation, which was crucial in the success of this operation.
“The JMPD remains committed to combating cable theft and protecting our city’s vital infrastructure. These arrests send a clear message that we will not tolerate criminal activity that disrupts essential services for our residents and businesses.”
