Lita Miti-Qamata champions women’s voices in innovation

This August, intellectual property attorney Lita Miti-Qamata is reminding women across Africa that innovation starts with protection.

In August, South Africa pauses to celebrate the resilience, creativity, and leadership of its women.

For Lita Miti-Qamata, an intellectual property attorney with 15 years’ experience, the month is not only a celebration but a call to action.

Her work spans the boardrooms of multinational brands and the community halls where she hosts free IP workshops for small businesses.

“When an entrepreneur realises their logo, product name, or design can be protected and monetised, you see a shift in their confidence.”

Miti-Qamata explained that her journey into IP law began unexpectedly during her legal articles. A partner invited her to assist in a trademark infringement case involving two well-known hotel brands.

“I enjoyed investigating, comparing, and building the case. It felt like solving a puzzle, and I knew I wanted to do more of it.”

But for Miti-Qamata, protecting brands is about more than legal battles; it’s about empowerment. She sees too many African businesses underestimate their IP or fail to safeguard it early.

“IP is an asset, just like property or equipment. It can generate income through licensing or royalties, and it can strengthen your position when seeking funding.”

She pointed out that balancing her demanding career with personal life had meant building an ecosystem of support, family, friends, and colleagues who helped her thrive.

She credits her mother for instilling the values that anchor her: self-belief, perseverance, and consistency.

As Women’s Month unfolds, Miti-Qamata calls for more than symbolic gestures.

“Let’s have ongoing dialogues, mentorships, and leadership programmes for women, not just in August.”

Miti-Qamata’s hopes for the future are clear in Africa, where strong IP laws protect innovation, attract investment, and create opportunities for the next generation of women leaders.
