First-time Discovery Vitality Run 5km runner relates his journey
Mandla Hlungwani, from Sandton, ticked his first 5km run off the calendar, as he took part in the Discovery Vitality Run.
For many, the idea of running 5km can feel daunting, but for one first-time participant in the Discovery Vitality Run on September 3, the experience proved to be less about speed and more about self-discovery.
According to Sandton’s Mandla Hlungwani, he wanted to challenge himself with something new and healthy.
“When I heard about the Discovery Vitality run, I felt it was the perfect opportunity to try running in a fun, supportive environment with colleagues.”

He added that the toughest part came midway through the race, especially when facing the uphill stretch back to the Discovery offices, but it was also the turning point.
“The best moment was pushing through those challenges and then seeing the finish line ahead, knowing I was about to complete my first 5km.”
Hlungwani said crossing the line was more than just a physical achievement.
“It showed me that I am capable of more than I think. Small steps can lead to meaningful achievements.”
He said to anyone considering their first 5km, the advice is simple: “Don’t overthink it, just start. Go at your own pace, enjoy the atmosphere, and remember: It’s not about being the fastest; it’s about finishing and having fun.”
