Theft out of motor vehicles on the rise in Sandton

Theft out of motor vehicles remains one of the most common crimes in Sandton, with incidents being reported almost daily at local shopping centres and petrol stations.

According to reports from Sandton CPF, the crimes occur most often between 15:00 and 21:00, when suspects target laptops and handbags left inside cars.

Many of these incidents are linked to remote-jamming devices, resulting in vehicles being left unlocked as victims walk away. “Criminals are watching. They often park close to their targets and can strike in under a minute. Residents need to treat all public areas as hotspots,” said the Sandton Community Policing Forum (CPF).

The CPF advised motorists to double-check that their cars are locked, avoid leaving valuables inside vehicles, and remain cautious when opening boots in public. “Prevention starts with awareness. If you see suspicious behaviour, report it immediately to security or SAPS on 10111.”
