Motorists and commuters in Region E are facing delays today following the temporary closure of Pretoria Main Road at the corner of Watt Avenue due to localised flooding.
The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) confirmed that a blocked kerb inlet caused water to overflow onto the roadway, severely disrupting traffic and stranding a Metrobus in the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) lane.

According to a JRA CEO Zweli Nyathi, the agency’s Region E road maintenance team is currently on site clearing the blockage. Emergency services, including Johannesburg EMS and JMPD, have been deployed to manage the situation and ensure safety for road users.
“This blockage has compromised traffic flow and raised safety concerns. We urge motorists to exercise caution, avoid the area if possible and follow JMPD instructions on-site,” said Nyathi.

To avoid major delays, motorists are strongly advised to use the following alternative routes:
- For through traffic:
- Use the M1 Highway as the primary alternative route.
- Travelling northbound: Access the M1 at the Grayston on-ramp via Arkwright Avenue.
- Travelling southbound: Access the M1 at Marlboro Drive.
For local traffic, motorists needing access to the immediate area can use 4th Street and 5th Street in Wynberg. “Please note that these are one-way streets and can be used to bypass the closed section of Pretoria Main Road. Road users and the general public are advised to consult JRA social media handles and website for updates that will be issued in due course,” Nyathi added.
Kindly take note of the following lifesaving measures to avoid any casualties due to the ongoing rains and potential flooding.
- Avoid flooded and flood-prone areas like low-lying zones and rivers.
- Avoid crossing flooded rivers.
- Refrain from driving or walking through flood waters and never use flooded roads because
even a shallow-looking road can be deeper than it appears. - Drive at a safe speed and maintain a safe following distance due to poor visibility.
- Look out for potential hazards such as hidden objects, mud, debris or damaged roads.
