SA youth embark on life-changing study journey in China

With the first cohort already on Chinese soil, 500 young South Africans are set to gain globally recognised skills through a fully funded international partnership that’s rewriting futures.

The first group of young South Africans have landed in China following their departure on September 17, ready to begin life-changing studies through a fully funded scholarship programme led by Inseta and LGSETA in partnership with the Chinese Culture International Education Exchange.

The emotional send-off for the full cohort of 500 learners was held on September 16 at Insetas’s head office in Illovo, marking a historic moment in youth empowerment, skills development, and global opportunity.

The initiative, formalised in a 2020 memorandum of understanding between Inseta and LGSETA, aims to empower young South Africans with globally relevant qualifications in fields critical to South Africa’s growth, such as engineering, artificial intelligence, and e-commerce.

Speaking at the send-off ceremony, Inseta CEO Gugu Mkhize expressed deep pride in the students and the collaborative efforts that made the initiative possible.

“We are celebrating 500 young people who will be pursuing different qualifications across China, ” she said. “This journey began with a shared vision between Inseta and LGSETA to offer opportunities both locally and internationally. The learners we selected are from all nine provinces, many of whom finished matric in 2022 or 2023 but struggled to find opportunities. This programme gives them a real chance to chase their dreams.

“We have funded everything from tuition, flights, accommodation, medical assessments, passports, police clearance, and even monthly stipends. Plus, there’s a psychosocial support system in place for their well-being while abroad.”

LGSETA CEO Ineeleng Molete highlighted the broader national importance of the programme. “We are proud to empower young South Africans with the knowledge and skills to become future leaders who will strengthen our country’s growth and resilience.”

Mkhize echoed the hope that these students would return to contribute meaningfully to their communities, though the path forward would ultimately be in their hands. “We’ve given them the springboard. Whether they return to start businesses, contribute to government, or join the private sector, our industries are ready to absorb and support them.”

One of the scholarship recipients, Boineelo Molusi, will study mechanical and electrical integration technology in Changchun, China.

“I am so excited for this opportunity. I’m very grateful to the organisations that made this happen, especially at the local government level. I’ve always wanted something like this. I’m also passionate about food, so I can’t wait to try Chinese cuisine and learn about the culture and language.”
