The streets of Sandton City came alive on October 25, as thousands gathered for Johannesburg Pride 2025, a celebration of love, diversity, and equality.
The annual event, one of Africa’s largest LGBTQIA+ gatherings, once again transformed Johannesburg’s urban heart into a sea of rainbow flags, music, and pride.
This year’s theme was celebrating being queer and African.

“I was so excited about the theme, especially since how we started pride month was rough,” said Oreneilwe Mosupse, one of the attendees of the event, coming all the way from Ga-Rankuwa, Pretoria.
“We were made to feel like we don’t belong after those rants that were made by people when a gay couple tied the knot in a traditional wedding, wearing traditional attire. So, it was a powerful twist to educate.”
Kaye Ally, founder and spokesperson of Pride of Africa and director of Johannesburg Pride, added: “The theme was about reclaiming identity in all its forms.
When I say: ‘Homophobia is not culture’, I mean exactly that. African culture, in all its richness and diversity, has always had space for queer people. Homophobia is a social prejudice, not a cultural truth, and pride exists to make that distinction undeniable.”

The pair, who met on Tinder, describe their relationship as one built on connection from the very start. “She swiped right, I swiped right, and the rest is history,” said Potgieter.
“After a six-hour video call, we just knew. Meeting up felt natural, like we’d known each other forever.”
Their shared energy carried through to their stylish looks for the day. “We went for a couple’s theme, something light,” said Prinsloo. “And yeah, it worked together perfectly.”
