Grade 1s find their feet at Bryanston Primary School

By the afternoon bell, nerves had melted away at Bryanston Primary School, where new Grade 1 pupils were already laughing, playing and running hand-in-hand with friends they had met just hours earlier.

By the time parents arrived to fetch their children on the first day of school, it was clear that something special had happened at Bryanston Primary School on January 14.

What began in the morning with cautious smiles and tightly held hands had transformed into confident laughter, muddy shoes and the unmistakable sound of children who did not want the day to end.

The atmosphere in the afternoon was warm and energetic. Small groups of Grade 1s were still racing across the playground, some darting away from parents with giggles as if school had always been their second home.

Others proudly introduced their new friends, chattering excitedly about games played, stories read and classrooms explored.

The school’s principal, Morné Marx, welcomed the newest members of the Bryanston Primary family with words of encouragement and excitement.

“Today we welcome our Grade 1s for their first day at school,” he said, noting that simply looking at them, one could see they were ready for their school journey.

He described the year ahead as one filled with big adventures. “For our Grade 1’s, it’s a year of big adventures for you. You’re going to make new friends, you’re going to explore the world, you’re going to learn to read, you’re going to learn to write, and it’s going to be amazing.”

That sense of adventure was already visible by the afternoon. Backpacks hung loosely from shoulders, ties were slightly crooked, and faces were glowing with pride.

Teachers smiled as they watched children who had arrived as strangers now walking off together, reluctant to say goodbye.

Marx encouraged the Grade 1s to approach their school years by being kind, curious, and brave, a message that seemed to have taken root within hours.

Kindness showed in shared snacks, curiosity in endless questions, and bravery in the way children confidently waved goodbye to teachers they had only just met.

As the sun dipped lower and the school grounds slowly emptied, one thing was certain: Bryanston Primary’s Grade 1s had not only survived their first day of school, they had embraced it.

And as the principal wished them a wonderful 2026, it was clear that this was just the beginning of many memories to come.
