Katie leads South Africa to glory in

Grade 11 learner Katie Cochran turned an international arena into her winning ground, helping South Africa claim showjumping glory and earning top honours for herself and her school.

When the pressure was on and seven nations lined up for equestrian supremacy, Brescia House’s Katie Cochran rose to the challenge and jumped South Africa straight to victory.

The Grade 11 learner was a standout member of the South African team that clinched the title at the FE South African Equestrian Federation Colours I Group IX Inter Africa Showjumping Team Competition, one of the most competitive junior showjumping events on the African calendar.

Riding her trusted partner, Callaho Luigi Vella, affectionately known as Luigi, Katie showcased the skill, focus, and determination that have become hallmarks of her riding career.

The victory not only earned South Africa the coveted team title; it also secured Katie her South African Equestrian Federation colours, an honour reserved for riders who consistently perform at the highest level. “I was definitely nervous at first, but the excitement quickly took over. It was a dream come true to represent South Africa in the sport I love, and to do so as part of a winning team made it even more special.”

Her selection for the national team was no small achievement. Katie was one of just three junior riders chosen through a rigorous selection process that considered performance, consistency, rankings, and qualifying rounds. She currently ranks among the top three junior riders in the country in the 1.20m showjumping division.

Central to her success is the powerful bond she shares with Luigi, a partnership built over two years of competition. “He has such a big personality and an incredible competitive spirit. He really knows when the big moments count.”

The international triumph crowned an exceptional year for the pair, which included victories in the KPC League Open Equitation and 1.20m Showjumping, selection for the Gauteng team at the South African Youth Championships, and a sixth-place national finish in the 1.20m division.

Balancing schoolwork with elite sport is no easy feat, but Katie credits her strong support system for keeping her grounded. She is coached by her aunt, Lauren Pretorius, at the family’s Hartbeespoort-based yard. “She’s had the biggest influence on my riding career and has taught me lessons that go far beyond the arena.”

With her final year as a junior rider approaching, Katie’s focus is firmly on the future. “This experience has shown me what’s possible. With Luigi by my side, I’m excited to keep pushing boundaries and chasing new goals.”
