Debut ride for Grade 6 equestrian

Local rider Shayla Sachs, based in Morningside, is proud to have qualified for all her classes, and to be heading to regionals.

It’s only her first year competing with the South African National Equestrian Schools Association (SANESA) qualifiers, but Grade 6 rider Shayla Sachs has already qualified for all her classes, and she’s heading to regionals with excitement, determination, and heart.

According to Shayla, she felt excited and proud about making the team. “My favourite event is equitation, because it brings together my two loves, which are jumping and flat work.”

She added that, like every great story, the have been a few hurdles, both literally and figuratively. “I had a lot of refusals during training. It knocked my confidence a bit.” Referring to the horse refusing to jump the obstacle.

This led to Shayla learning one of the sport’s biggest lessons. “No matter what happens, get back in the saddle. It will all work out.”

She shares a powerful bond with her horse. “It’s built on trust, patience, and love. A look or a breath can say more than words.”

Shayla pointed out that, before a big show, nerves do creep in, but she handles them with calm and kindness. “I say to myself: ‘We’ll do great’, and I give my horse a hug.”

She says she loves being part of the Redhill Equestrian Team. “It’s a community that’s loving and supportive… No matter what.”
