Pikitup Marlboro depot shutdown as casual workers demand permanent jobs
Waste collection in Ward 103 has been disrupted after casual Pikitup workers blocked the Marlboro depot, demanding appointment letters for permanent employment.
Waste collection in parts of Ward 103 and surrounding wards in Johannesburg came to a halt after Pikitup casual workers shut down the Marlboro depot, blocking the entrance with piles of refuse and preventing waste trucks from operating.

The shutdown follows a strike by casual workers, which resulted in waste not being collected in Ward 103 on January 27.

According to Ward 103 councillor Lynda Shackelford, the disruption has left many residents frustrated as refuse continues to pile up.

On January 28, Pikitup workers were seen sitting outside the Marlboro depot gates, which remained closed.

The workers have made it clear that operations will not resume until they receive appointment letters confirming permanent positions.
The media were not allowed to take photographs or engage with the workers at the scene.
Pikitup has not issued an official statement regarding the shutdown. We will update once we have it.
