Sandton water supply under strain as reservoir levels decline

Johannesburg Water has advised residents to monitor official communication channels for further updates.

Johannesburg Water released a statement on January 28 about the water supply across Sandton, which is under increasing pressure, with several reservoirs and towers reporting declining levels and critically low capacity.

According to the issued statement at 13:20, it shows that the Sandton system is constrained due to poor incoming supply.

Johannesburg Water said interventions are underway, including closing certain outlets and isolating pumping systems to retain capacity and support recovery.

Several key reservoirs are currently supplying water at fair, but declining levels, with residents warned to expect poor pressure, and in some cases, no water at all.

The Illovo reservoir and tower are both still supplying water, but levels are dropping. Pumping at the Illovo tower is set to be suspended, with poor pressure to no water expected.

In Bryanston, the situation is more difficult. While the Bryanston reservoir is still supplying fairly, the Bryanston tower is critically low, and pumping has been suspended. Residents in tower-fed areas should prepare for extended periods of little to no water.

Other affected areas include Morningside, Linbro Park, and Marlboro, where reservoirs are supplying fairly but continue to decline. Direct feed areas in Linbro and Marlboro are also expected to experience poor pressure.

The Randjieslaagte reservoir is critically low, with poor pressure to no water anticipated.

The Dunkeld reservoir is currently on bypass, but continues to supply water fairly.
