River Club residents fume as two-month pipe burst remains unrepaired

Two months after a pipe burst on Mngeni Road in River Club, an open excavation and ongoing leak have left residents frustrated and safety concerns mounting.

Residents of River Club are getting more and more frustrated, as an unresolved burst pipe and open excavation continue to cause disruptions on Mngeni Road two months after the initial incident.

Ward 103 councillor Lynda Shackelford says the area has remained in a hazardous condition since early December, where a pipe burst required excavation work.

“This area, on Mngeni Road, has been like this since December. The problem here is, Johannesburg Water (JW) eventually came out on February 2 to do a backfill on the excavation at Van Meurs Avenue, but they couldn’t backfill this one because there is still a leak in the hole.”

She added that the matter has been re-reported to JW, but ongoing service delivery delays have left the site in limbo. A mound of sand remains piled along the roadside and the open excavation remains as a safety risk.

“My biggest issue now, is that the resident can’t repair their pavement. There’s a mound of sand on the road, and this road is dark at night because the street lights aren’t working. We’re going to have a car drive into this. If not, someone is going to fall into the hole. There are a lot of animal walkers and people here.”

Shackelford called on JW to prioritise outstanding reinstatement work, particularly where incomplete backfilling disrupts neighbourhoods. “JW needs to start catching up on jobs like this, especially where the backfilling, the sand, and all of that is causing a disruption to the area.”

The publication reached out to JW for a comment. Updates will be provided once they become available.
