Johannesburg Roads Agency postpones root pruning in Gallo Manor due to equipment unavailability

JRA says the new date for the operation will be confirmed once the TLB becomes available.

The planned pruning of the invasive root system on Carnation Street in Gallo Manor, which was scheduled to take place today, has been postponed.

Johannesburg Roads Agency said the postponement is due to the unavailability of a tractor-loader-backhoe (TLB), required to carry out the operation. The roads agency said that a new date for the operation will be confirmed, but that they are still waiting for the availability of the TLB.

The work was set to be conducted in collaboration with Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo following concerns raised by the residents, and Ward 109 councillor Lori Coogan. During the site visit, on February 23, Coogan said the tree roots are lifting the asphalt, creating a hazardous raised section for motorist.

Responding to these concerns, on February 24, Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo spokesperson Jenny Moodley said root pruning has been scheduled for March 3, and will be conducted jointly with JRA to ensure that both the tree management and road surface repair processes are properly aligned.

“JRA needs to be on board as they have to lift the tar surface in order for the roots to be pruned. Following the root pruning process, JRA will proceed with the necessary road surface repairs to restore structural integrity and eliminate the hazard.”

Residents will be informed once a revised date has been made available.
