Watch: Police pursuit sparks confusion at Winifred Mandela Precinct

Winifred Mandela Precinct Shopping Centre has dismissed reports of an armed robbery after suspects fleeing police entered the precinct during a SAPS pursuit. The centre remains open and operational.

Management of Winifred Mandela Precinct Shopping Centre in Bryanston has dismissed reports circulating on social media alleging that an armed robbery or shooting took place at the centre on June 22.

The clarification comes after a heavy police presence was seen near the centre.

The centre clarifies the situation

In a statement, centre management said no armed robbery or similar criminal incident took place at the shopping centre.

According to management, an incident occurred outside the precinct and was followed by a pursuit by the South African Police Service (SAPS). During the chase, the suspect or suspects entered the shopping centre area in an apparent attempt to evade arrest.

As a result, there has been an increased police presence in and around the precinct while SAPS continues its investigation and operational activities.

“At no stage was the shopping centre the target or location of an armed robbery,” centre management said.
