Weekly crime updates in Sandton
Woodmead Retail Park was regarded as the hotspot for theft out of motor vehicles from March 6 to March 9 as stated by Sergeant Mpho Lechaba.
Newly recruited officer taking over Sandton’s social crime prevention, Sergeant Mpho Lechaba, shared various crime trends affecting the area during the week ending on March 12.
Lechaba said from March 6 to March 9, reported crime activities in the Sandton area were carjacking (2), housebreaking (3), murder (1), sexual assaults (2) and aggravated robberies (3).
“Theft out of motor vehicles is still an issue in Sector 2, which is Woodmead, Maxwell Drive, Woodlands and Western Road in Morningside. Sector 1 is faced with the rise of common robberies and housebreakings.”
When discussing plans on eradicating the rise of crime trends in the areas, Lechaba said her team will be visiting the locations with the reported crime activities to promote safety awareness campaigns starting with Woodmead Retail Park and Chili Lane in Rivonia.
“I have to keep the community safe and one of the best ways is by informing the public on what to do and what not to do in public or in residential spaces. I urge the residents to always be vigilant, especially with the crime trend, theft out of motor vehicles. Don’t just lock your car without inspecting if it is locked, check every time if it is locked when shopping. With housebreakings, make sure that all your entry points, including windows are closed, locked and sealed. Criminals can still gain entry, but at least play your part in preventing it from easily occurring.”
