St David’s Marist Inanda welcomes new Joburg Mini Councillors

St David’s Marist Inanda wishes its 2023 Johannesburg Mini Councillors well as they prepare work together to make the community a better place.

St David’s Marist Inanda recently welcomed its newly appointed Johannesburg Mini Councillors for 2023.

Alec Psaros and Slade King will join the Mini Council next year as it carries out amazing services to the community and charity organisations all while representing the interests of the city’s youth.

According to teacher Sharon Meirowitz, the council has been running for several years as a non-profit organisation that assists and runs collections for disadvantaged groups and organisations.

“Within this group, a management committee is selected with a mayor, deputy mayor and chief whip and the heads of each committee.”

For example, the Smile committee recently contributed to collections that put smiles on the facts of those less fortunate.

“Our annual collections include the Easter Egg Drive, Santa Drive [running presently] and winter clothing or blanket collections. The pupils who are selected to be part of the Mini Council are kind and considerate individuals who generously give up their time to be of service to others.”

Each year, two learners from schools in Johannesburg are selected to be part of the council. Last year, Michael Savva-Savvi and Daniel Nyamgero represented St David’s Marist at the Mini Council.

According to Daniel, being part of the council was not a reward but rather a responsibility.

“Mini Council is a place where people with common minds come together to do good. Feeding the poor, helping the elderly, playing with orphans, you name it,” he said.

“Together, Michael, our fellow council friends and I achieve incredible things. I know I’ve made friends that’ll last a lifetime… We are family.”

Michael recalled his time on the council as some of the best in his life.

“You might be thinking it’s the usual kind of council. Well, it’s not. We are a group of young people who would like to change the world. We want to be better leaders in society, and change how things work. We help others, the underprivileged,” he said.

“Mini Council has been a once-in-a-lifetime experience for me that will forever be stored in my heart. My eyes have forever been opened.”

The outgoing councillors wished the new councillors a fruitful year ahead filled with possibilities.
