Monopoly on steroids challenge

A business simulation aimed at providing a meaningful, authentic learning experience for the students in which they can apply the knowledge and skills they have accumulated.

A two-day Business Simulation Challenge hosted at Varsity College Sandton provided 20 IIE Bachelor of Commerce final year and IIE Bachelor of Honours in Commerce students with the opportunity to put theory into practice.

Facilitated by Jan Pelser, the managing member of diversity training, the order of the day was application and critical thinking.

Anto Kagisho, the PR and events coordinator at the college, said, “The students formed groups and created businesses for which they had to put together business plans that included financial and marketing strategies.”

She added that Mr. Pelser was responsible for ensuring that the students knew what was expected of them and for assessing all the work that was put into the business plans.

“The challenge is part of an exciting IIE’s Varsity College Sandton initiative known as ‘Beyond the Curriculum’ aimed at providing a meaningful, true learning experience for students where they apply the knowledge and skills they have accumulated during their undergraduate and postgraduate studies to solve real-world problems.”

Minehle Mcineka, the third-year IIE Bachelor of Commerce, said the Business Simulation Challenge was such a great way to test their knowledge and for them to apply the theory they have been taught.

“This experience also allowed me to pick the minds of the industry. Being able to work as part of our group was what I thought it would be like sitting in a large boardroom and having to make big decisions. I walked away having acquired new ways of interpreting business and some of the challenges one stands to face when running a business.”

Mcineka concluded by saying that more often the text teaches them the ‘theoretical’ way of running businesses; however, this challenge taught her to consider and cover all grounds before making decisions.
