Wynberg recyclers loved on World Homeless Day

A non-government organisation spent World Homeless Day feeding recyclers in Wynberg.

Angels exist, and they come armed with ladles for dishing up wholesome bowls of love in Sandton.

The Gauteng branch of the non-government organisation Ladles of Love spent World Homeless Day dispensing their love by the spoonful in Wynberg on October 10.

“We served around 382 meals at World Homeless Day; we had volunteers help chop, cook and serve the meals to the guys who pull the recycling,” said Candice Etberg, chief operating officer at Ladles of Love Johannesburg.

Etberg, who has been co-founding and running NGOs for the past 20 years, described Ladles of Love’s main mission as being ‘to positively impact as many lives as possible with dignity, love and respect’.

“Every human being deserves access to food, shelter and ablution,” Etberg said. “Homelessness is not going away. Therefore, to relieve the suffering of their situation, we express our compassion through serving delicious and memorable meals.”

Ladles of Love has been operating a warehouse in Wynberg since May 2022 – an extension of their branch in Cape Town that has been operating for the past decade.

“We serve over 5000 meals a day and have 23 community kitchens,” said Etberg. “We also have environmentally sustainable projects; as well as education and nutrition programmes in the early childhood development centres.”
