BHS learners go from Bryanston to the world in 2024
A principal’s reflection on the year of memories crafted by learners and staff alike at Bryanston High School.
The years spent in high school can be some of the most character-defining experiences people ever get to have.
The learners and teachers at Bryanston High School (BHS) spent this year crafting memories through achieving milestones.
According to principal Jerome Lawrence, from making progress towards cultivating learners who are able to read for meaning through the President’s Challenge, as well as the collaborative purchase of the school’s reading lab with Wits University; to educators self-enhancing through obtaining accreditation as Microsoft innovative educators – life at BHS in 2024 was eventful.

“In collaboration with Wacom, we have managed to get up to speed with the use of technology in the classroom with a world first in terms of digital art,” said Lawrence. “Many of our educators were recognised as being the top in their subject at the District Awards. Under the guidance of our passionate educators, two of our learners excelled at fairs, receiving a gold medal at the International Engineering, Science and Technology Fair in Tunisia, and at the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair in California, USA.

”Within the scope of seven months, two passionate staff members have taken our robotics team to National Championships and numerous podium positions in various competitions. To the extent that robotics is set to be an official subject as early as 2026. “Another feather in our cap is that after the National Gr 9 Business Games, we are now ranked as the top school in the country [for the subject]. We look forward to the budding entrepreneurs that this programme will yield.”

In October, the school arranged a Teacher Appreciation Day surprise function for teachers at the school. A number of teachers from the school also completed their first marathons this year, and some of the school’s learners attended a European tour through Germany, France, Italy, Czech Republic and Belgium.
“These are but a few of the many highlights in class, the stage and the field and we look forward to even better in 2025,” Lawrence said, wishing the Sandton and Bryanston communities a happy festive season. “We are also proud of the participation and support of many of our learners in the fight against testicular cancer through their participation in the Daredevil Run.”
