Crawford International Sandton student swims to matric success
Matriculant Bjorn Mhlanga shares how his dedication, family support, and swimming discipline led to success in matric, and his future plans at Tuks.
Bjorn Mhlanga, a matriculant from Crawford International Sandton, is celebrating a remarkable academic achievement that reflects not only his hard work but also the powerful support system surrounding him.
With his impressive results, Bjorn is excited to embark on the next chapter of his life, studying international relations at the University of Pretoria, while continuing to pursue his passion for swimming at Tuks.
Reflecting on his journey, Bjorn shared that the exams leading up to his final matric results were a gradual, yet rewarding process. “Honestly, it has been such a relief to see that through all the exams, since June, I have gradually increased my percentages. It shows that anything I put my mind to will succeed.”

For Bjorn, balance was key throughout his matric year. Despite his love for swimming, he made a conscious decision to prioritise academics. “This year I did take a bit of a pause on my swimming, compared to previous years. I put the schoolwork first and swimming second.”
However, he believes his time in the pool also contributed to his success, seeing it as a mental break that recharged his motivational batteries. “Swimming was my escape. It helped me recollect my thoughts and return to studying with renewed focus.”
Family support played a crucial role in his journey. “My entire family has been my biggest support throughout my studies. They have always been there for me.”

Bjorn also offered advice to the Class of 2025, as they prepare for their final year. “Do everything on time and avoid not asking questions. Always ask if you’re lost.”
He said he found that giving himself enough time to prepare for the bigger subjects, while leaving the choice subjects for closer to exams, was key to his success. “I am right where I want to be, and ready to make the most of my opportunities at university.”
