Bryanston golfers swing into action for CANSA

A colourful weekend of golf and fundraising at the Douglas Trophy, showcasing Bryanston’s dedication to community support and cancer awareness, with R20 000 raised for CANSA.

The Douglas Trophy, one of the most anticipated events on the Bryanston Country Club calendar, once again brought together the local golfing community in a celebration of competition, camaraderie, and support for a worthy cause.

Held over the weekend of March 15, the event not only provided an exciting 36-hole challenge but also raised significant funds for the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA).

This year, the tournament took on a colourful twist, with the popular Sprayathon concept, where members could participate in a fun-filled activity of getting sprayed with vibrant colours.

Staff members enthusiastically joined in, spraying hair, arms, and even legs, contributing to the festive atmosphere, while raising additional funds for CANSA.

A R50 donation was incorporated into the competition fee, ensuring that every participant could contribute to the cause.

Despite the wet weather, 240 members braved the conditions, showing their unwavering commitment to both the tournament and the community.

“The Douglas Trophy is not just about competition; it is about coming together as a community to make a difference,” said John White, golf men’s captain at Bryanston Country Club.

He added that it is a reflection of how their members are deeply tied to the community and committed to supporting important causes like CANSA.

The efforts paid off, as an impressive R20 000 was raised for CANSA. This generous amount was presented to Ester Pretorius, a dedicated member of CANSA West Rand for over 22 years.

“It is truly inspiring to see such a strong commitment to supporting those affected by cancer,” remarked Pretorius as she received the cheque. “These funds will make a meaningful impact for those who need it most.”

Nomvula Nkabinde, ladies’ captain, echoed the sentiments, highlighting the incredible participation from the ladies of the club. “We had around 240 members involved, and the ladies embraced the opportunity to wear as much colour as possible to celebrate cancer awareness. We are so proud to carry on the heritage and culture of this event.”

Andrew Rogers, general manager of Bryanston Country Club, said: “This event is a testament to the spirit of our community. It’s wonderful to see our members come together, not only for a weekend of great golf but also to make a real difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.”
