Drivers at daily risk in Kew

Potholes on 9th Road in Kew force drivers into dangerous manoeuvres.

Two potholes along 9th Road in Kew are forcing drivers into risky situations, swerving into oncoming traffic or hugging the pavement just to get by.

The first pothole sits close to the curb near a bend, a large, worn-out cavity with crumbling edges.

Though it may not span the whole lane, its depth and sharp border make it a threat to tyres and suspension systems.

Drivers approaching from the corner often spot it too late and jerk their wheels left to avoid impact.

Worse still is the second pothole further down the road.

It stretches unevenly along the yellow line near the edge of the tar, forming a long, raised bump with torn, cracked edges.

It’s less of a hole and more of a warped chunk of road, the kind that yanks at steering alignment if taken at speed.

Anele Dube, a driver who uses the road every day, said, “I drive this road every morning, and each day it feels like I am gambling with my tyres.”

He added that the one by the pavement, one doesn’t dodge it, but feels it.

“And when there’s a car in the opposite lane, you just have to pray.”
