Removal of right-turn signal at busy Sandton intersection sparks safety concerns
Sandton residents raise alarm over safety at the Katherine and Grayston intersection, following the removal of a right-turn signal to accommodate Rea Vaya's bus lane.
Local resident Maga Moodley has voiced his worries following the removal of the right-turn traffic signal onto the Grayston Drive onramp at the intersection with Katherine Street.
Previously, motorists could safely turn right with the aid of a dedicated signal, but this was removed with the introduction of the Rea Vaya bus lane.

“It is a battle to drive safely through that intersection,” said Moodley. “I am concerned for my safety, as well as that of other motorists and pedestrians. My concern is purely that of a motorist using that section of the road. It’s not safe to turn onto Grayston Drive.”
City of Johannesburg Transport Department marketing and communications director Benny Makgoga explained the reasoning behind this change. “The technical rationale behind removing right turn movements at certain intersections along the bus rapid transit (BRT) corridor is to improve the overall operating speed of the buses along the corridor, optimising efficiency and reliability of the bus service. Right turn vehicles crossing the bus lane forces an additional stop, disrupting the flow of the high frequency bus service and increasing travel times.”
He added that eliminating right turns simplifies traffic signal phasing, allowing buses to maintain priority and consistent schedules, which is critical for the system’s success. “Public participation was conducted in Region E before the Rea Vaya project was approved, in compliance with legislation. Traffic engineers are currently monitoring the intersection and exploring feasible options to address the concerns before the Rea Vaya buses launch in September 2025.”
The city acknowledged the inconvenience caused by removing the right-turn lane and confirmed ongoing assessments of traffic flow, congestion, and safety. They also noted that direct engagements with community stakeholders have commenced to address safety issues.
