Trek4Mandela launches inspiring coffee table book to fight period poverty
The Imbumba Foundation, in collaboration with the Industrial Development Corporation, launched the much-anticipated Trek4Mandela coffee table book on August 14, a powerful visual tribute to the movement’s journey to end period poverty and empower young girls across Africa.
A momentous celebration unfolded at the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) headquarters in Sandton on August 14 as the Imbumba Foundation, in partnership with the IDC, officially launched the Trek4Mandela coffee table book.
The visually rich publication chronicles more than a decade of impactful climbs up Mount Kilimanjaro, all driven by one mission: To end period poverty for millions of girls across South Africa and beyond.

Featuring breath-taking imagery and compelling reflections from notable South African figures, such as Professor Thuli Madonsela, Dr Pali Lehohla, and Sello Hatang, the book encapsulates the spirit of unity, resilience, and purpose that has defined the Trek4Mandela initiative since its inception in 2012.
Imbumba Foundation CEO and Trek4Mandela founder Richard Mabaso delivered an emotional reflection on the origins of the movement, sparked by a deeply personal family moment. “In 2011, I was lying under a tree when my niece came crying. Blood was flowing down her thighs, she was starting her period and didn’t understand what was happening.
“She told my mom, but my mom said: ‘No, you can’t speak about this in front of your uncle’. That day changed my life. In 2012, I decided to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, and today, I can say we’ve reached over three million girls with dignity packs, thanks to our partners and supporters.”
The launch also unveiled plans for Trek4Mandela International, including upcoming climbs in Italy and Australia, as well as a major new campaign, breaking the Guinness World Record for the most people braaiing simultaneously, all in the name of raising funds for the cause.
Big Save head of marketing, and a long time Trek4Mandela partner, Dylan Jardim introduced the world-record attempt to be held at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Heritage Day, September 24. “This was my crazy brainchild, to break the official Guinness World Record for the most people braaiing at one venue. It’s R200 a ticket, and with that, you’ll get boerewors, a roll, and an apron.
“The money that you spend will go directly to Trek4Mandela, to support the world’s food day drive, where they are aiming to provide one million meals across South Africa.”
