Bryanston Primary hosts first ever Art in the Park event
Bryanston Primary School celebrated spring with a joyful burst of creativity, as learners, parents, and local artists came together for the school’s inaugural Art in the Park event.
The Bryanston Primary School grounds were transformed into a hub of artistic expression, featuring everything from live music and dancing to painting and clay classes, with both learners and local artists taking centre stage as the school hosted its first ever Art in the Park event.
The event, on September 27, organised by Yolande van der Merwe and her team, aimed to showcase the creative talents of the school’s learners, while strengthening ties within the broader Bryanston community.

School principal Morné Marx said: “Today we are celebrating spring, and the local talent that we have. We’ve got everything from art to music, to belly dancing classes, to play classes. It’s really just to bring a different level of holistic education into our school.”
Families and visitors wandered between vibrant stalls and activity areas, watching learners participate in t-shirt painting, portrait work, clay modelling, singing, and dancing.

The event also featured contributions from amateur local artists, who offered their time and creativity to support the school community.
“We are celebrating spring, and we are celebrating life,” said Van der Merwe. “All the kids performing here are from our school, and we invited local amateur artists to join. We just want people to enjoy the arts and to come and participate.”
Van der Merwe said, despite the usual challenges of event planning, including last minute cancellations and unpredictable changes, they remained focused on their goal of community engagement through the arts. “There are always obstacles when you work with people and plan events, but we’re just grateful that this became a success. Our learners are painting, dancing, and participating, that’s what we wanted.”
Marx echoed the sentiment, hinting at future editions of the event. “If I look at it currently, absolutely, there will be a follow-up. Our parents and learners have, yet again, shown they are willing to participate. A big thank you to Yolande and her team for putting this together.”
